Honestly, there have not been a lot of good RPG’s coming from Japanese developers. In the other hand, western guys have been releasing a bunch of good stuff for all consoles. Here are the 5 best RPG’s for this generation so far:
#5 Valkyria Chronicles — SEGA — PS3
“The vast-majority rest of the time, Valkyria Chronicles offers a unique take on RPG-strategy, a truly involving story, endearing characters, and a chance to reflect upon—or wonderfully, hopelessly anachronize— whatever sense of real-world history you may still have in your head.”
#4 Fable 2 — Microsoft — Xbox 360
“Molyneux invites us to the fantasy world of Albion. It’s a beautiful story where we have all the freedom to live our live as we want. Good or evil? Hero or villain? Family head or silent assassins? It’s all up to us. Excellent presentation, good graphics, great combat system and many surprises in one of the best RPG’s to date”
#3 The World Ends With You — Square-Enix — Nintendo DS
“The World Ends With You is an amazing marriage of style and gameplay. The dual screen combat further stretches what the DS can achieve in gaming that is far from a lame gimmick.”
#2 Mass Effect — Microsoft — Xbox 360 / PC
“An incredible effort from any perspective, Mass Effect sets the new standard for story-driven games, and has unquestionably surpassed all others to become the preeminent science fiction franchise today.”
#1 Fallout 3 — Bethesda Softworks — Xbox 360 / PC / PS3
“Although Fallout 3 is fundamentally a role-playing game, its success lies in the way it balances — and sometimes betters — the approaches of other videogame masterpieces: the retro immersion of “BioShock,” the paranoia of “Portal,” the exploration of “Oblivion” and the seamless storytelling of “Half-Life 2.”
Other good RPG’s that almost made it to this list: Dragon Quest V (NDS), Tales of Vesperia (Xbox 360), Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360), Elder Scrols IV: Oblivion (Xbox 360, PC, PS3)
I am sorry but fallout 3 does not beat out oblivion, not by a country mile.
VC is the best on that list my a mile. Whoever wrote this list clearly has very little experience with RPGs.
Yeh I think Oblivion beats out Fallout 3
I love Fallout. I mean I LOVE Fallout. But nothing should have beaten Valkyria Chronicles. It’s the most well-conceived, entertaining, and unique game I have played in years. Fallout beats it hands down in play time, but not even close in overall enjoyment.
I totally agree. Oblivion takes Fallout any day! I thought Fallout would be awesome, and it is, but it lacks that open massive feeling that Oblivion gave you. And Oblivion had the mystical side, which added fun.
@ above
oblivion and f3 aren’t the best rpg out there this gen. And why Valkyria Cronicles is on list ? It’s strategy game with good story and it’s not a rpg game.
To all:
RPG is ROLE PLAYING game not hack and slash them
If game like valkyria chronicles has statistics and shops with armors it doesn’t automaticly make a game a RPG. It’s true to other games.
Gears of war with dexterity luck etc stats won’t be a rpg. You must play a role in the game not listen… ehh
I love Fallout 3 and Mass Effect, but it seriously shows how down hill the RPG market has gone down. Fable II? Seriously? And where is Oblivion? How can a Game of the Year not make it on the Top 5 List and Chronicles and World DS make it on here? How about Chrono Trigger DS? (or does that not count since it is a remake w/ bonuses?)
You should try Demon’s Souls for PS3. pure awesomeness.
I take it you’ve been living under a rock since before Christmas??? Where is White Knight Chronicles?
I’m sorry, but that game is far from being one of the best RPG’s on the market.
White Knight Chronicles is a better RPG then any of the ones you mentioned. Also, if you’re counting DS games then where’s Pokemon?
If you include the Ds into the mix , then no reason to not have ps2 titles like persona 4 or PSP stuff like FF7 crisis core , at least in the “almost made it”
FYI: NDS is part of this generation. Why I didn’t include Persona 4? Because that is a PS2 game. PS2 is a last-gen console.
Crisis-Core is also other game that’s far from being among the best games released this gen.
I agree mostly but I wouldn’t consider Fable 2 an RPG. Plus it kind of stunk IMO.

yeah fable is pretty good so is mass effect good list
WTF!!!!!!!!!!! are you all retarded? Mass Effect rapes ALL and any RPG’s that have come out so far. You guys must LITERALLY be mentally retarded to not think Mass Effect is the best so far. Seriously.
Valkyria Chronicles is not a RPG, it is a strategy game. A good one, but not a RPG.
Fable 2 has more in common with Zelda then with any RPG. If it’s considered RPG, then it’s definitely not a pure one or a JRPG, but an Action RPG like most other games which are released nowadays.
Mass Effect 1 was the hybrid of an Action RPG and a Shooter. So it couldn’t even be considered a real Action RPG.
Mass Effect 2 has no RPG-similarities at all anymore.
Fallout 3 is an Action RPG. Not a classical RPG like for example Neverwinter Nights. (Same goes for Oblivion)
Games like Dragon Age, Risen, Gothic or Two Worlds are better suited for PC’s (Mods, user content, more liberty for the user). But if they would be mentioned here, then all but DAO are Action RPG’s too. DAO 1 is a RPG, but DAO 2 might not be after all that has been told about it so far.
Good JRPG’s and Strategy JRPG’s for (next gen) consoles were not even mentioned here. As there are:
Tales of Vespiria (by far the best JRPG for next gen consoles so far)
Lost Odyssey
Blue Dragon
Agarest
Final Fantasy XIII (it’s not good, but it’s not bad either)
Star Ocean: The last Hope
Didn’t play Disgaea 3, Resonance of Fate or Infinite Undiscovery yet, so can’t say if those are any good. But they’re JRPG’s (and Strategy JRPG’s) too.
